PRELIMINARY ENGINEERING TOOL
kVA to amps calculator
Convert apparent power in kVA or MVA to steady-state current using the voltage and phase arrangement you enter.
Inputs
Calculation steps
I = S / (√3 × VLL)
I = 100000.00 VA / (√3 × 415 V)
I = 100000.000 / 718.801
Formula ID: POWER_THREE_PHASE_KVA_V2
Assumptions and references
kVA is apparent power. Power factor is not an input to this current relationship. Use total three-phase kVA and line-to-line voltage for the balanced three-phase case. This does not predict starting or fault current.
UNDERSTAND THE TOOL
What this calculator does
Turn an apparent-power rating into current at a selected voltage without applying power factor a second time.
How to use it
- Choose single phase or balanced three phase.
- Enter the full equipment rating in kVA or MVA.
- Enter load voltage for single phase or line-to-line voltage for three phase.
- Read the current and substituted equation, then review other equipment constraints.
Fields and meanings
- Supply arrangement
- Select the formula for one phase or total balanced three-phase apparent power.
- Rating unit
- One MVA equals 1000 kVA; the tool converts both to VA internally.
- Apparent power
- Nameplate or operating apparent power for the full equipment, not per-winding power unless that is your intended basis.
- Voltage
- Voltage across the single-phase load or line-to-line voltage for balanced three phase.
Review required. A nameplate kVA rating is not measured operating load. This conversion does not determine cable size, inrush or fault current.
